Dr. John Butler is a highly regarded hypnotherapist with over 30 years of verifiable professional practice and over 30,000 hours of clinical experience. He has used hypnotherapy in a great variety of professional settings and been a therapist to high-level performers in many fields.
He is a leading hypnotherapy teacher in the UK and internationally. He chose to begin his hypnotherapy teaching career only after he had gained 10 years of extensive clinical practice and has accumulated over 20 years’ experience of teaching hypnotherapy to a wide variety of professional groups. He wrote and taught the first official training in hypnotherapy in the NHS, offered through the Royal College of Nursing/University of Manchester in 1992.
He is an approved hypnotherapy instructor for the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners (ACHE). He received an “Excellence in Teaching” award from the ACHE in 2008 and a “Lifetime Achievement” for his work in hypnotherapy in 2011 as well as awards from different countries for his contribution to hypnotherapy.
He is an instructor in Hypnosurgery teaching clinical hypnosis applications to surgeons and anesthetists in a course accredited by the Royal College of Anesthetists.
He has taught dental hypnosis to many dental professionals and written many articles on the subject for dental publications.
He has been a speaker on performance improvement for major businesses including Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, BUPA and Ernst & Young.
He has extensive training in many styles of hypnotherapy and studied several forms of psychotherapy, holding membership of various hypnotherapy and psychotherapy organizations, including the UKCP (UK Council of Psychotherapy) and EAP (European Association of Psychotherapy). He holds membership of the British Psychological Society and his academic background includes extensive training in academic and applied psychology and in medical science.
Dr Butler has taught in higher education for over 20 years. He has lectured in medical psychology, medical neuroscience and related medical subjects. He taught clinical neuroanatomy and worked in neuroendocrinology research. He was the principal lecturer in medical psychology teaching at Kings College London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He has taught applied psychology to students at top international business universities.
He served for many years on the governing board of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and was instrumental in drafting the first educational standards for this organization.
He organized the first conference of heads and delegates of hypnotherapy schools and registers to start the processes of standards-setting and voluntary regulation of education and practice in hypnotherapy the UK in 1986.
His contribution to the profession of hypnotherapy was formally recognized in 2004 by an award from a national confederation of Hypnotherapists and by many subsequent awards.
He received a lifetime achievement award from the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners in 2011 for his work in the field.
He has acted as an expert witness and as an advisor to the police in legal cases involving hypnosis.
His work was first filmed over 15 years ago and since then has been reported many times in the media, including featuring in “Time” magazine and “Science” magazine. He has featured in a major live television broadcast demonstrating hypnosis as a sole anesthetic while surgery was performed on a patient in April 2006.
He has made more than 30 media appearances as an expert in hypnotherapy with several TV programs focused on his use of hypnotherapy as an anesthetic for chronic pain and in invasive surgeries.
He is the clinical author of the popular book “Secrets of Hypnotherapy” (Pub. Dorling Kindersley) and has contributed to many articles in the press and professional journals.
